With the person in a supine position, locate the point at the intersection of the two nipples in the midline of the sternum in male or at the 4th intercostal space of the midline of the sternum in female.
[Efficacy and Indications]
RN 17 has the functions of relieving chest distension to rectify qi, and promoting blood to remove obstruction from the meridians (especially in the breasts). It is applicable for all kinds of qi stagnation or dyfunctions of the qi dynamic such as counterflow of lung qi, qi and blood stasis of the heart, and liver qi stagnation. Counterflow of lung qi occurs in respiratory system diseases, causing symptoms including cough, bronchial asthma, and shortness of breath. Qi and blood stasis of the heart can manifest as cardiovascular diseases, including palpitations, myocardial ischemia, and insomnia. Liver qi stagnation can cause depression, anxiety, grief, or hysteria.
RN 17 can not only promote blood circulation, unblock the collaterals and relieve pain, soften hardness [lumps] and eliminate swelling, it can also improve immunity. It is often used in the treatment of reduced postpartum milk secretion, breast hyperplasia, and mastitis.
[Massage method]
Knead RN 17 with a finger. Ask the patient to lie on his back with a family member sitting on the side. The family member should place a thumb or middle finger on RN 17 and hold other four fingers lightly around it. Swing or rotate the wrist joint softly, so that the affected part lifts the subcutaneous tissue in repeated, uninterrupted, rhythmic and gentle rotations.
Rubbing RN 17 with four fingers. Ask the patient to lie on his back, and a family member sitting on the side. He or she should put the surface of the index finger, middle finger, ring finger and little fingers together on RN 17, with the wrist joint slightly bent. After that, perform a circular or rhythmic massage in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction. The wrist band should be flexible, gentle but not floating.
