Standing poses or martial arts stances are a kind of exercise that combines static and dynamic, internal and external nurturing. They rejuvenate the heart spirit while building up the physical body. Therefore, they are not only suitable medical treatment, more importantly, persistent exercise can also make the weak stronger, make the strong stronger, dispel diseases and prolong life.
The relationships of mutual connection and restraint between the physical body, the mind, and qi are the basis of the efficacy of standing poses, which mainly work because they strengthen and adjust the balance of yin-yang. Shape (posture) and mind (mental activities) are both the foundations of this exercise and they must be equally emphasized. “Mind is generated from the posture of the body, the shape of the body will be reflected in the shape of the mind; mind in generated by the posture of the body ,and posture also changes as the mind shifts [to different mental states].” When we practice, as long as the body and mind are working together flexibly, appropriately and harmoniously, strength generates itself, and the qi flows by itself.
The powerful penetrating power and strength generated by training through standing poses is nothing more than the result of muscle coordination. The opposing movements of the extensors and flexors instead become coordinated movements, and one can achieve the complete integration of muscle movements.
In short, it is the process of “muscles being integrating as one”. Through stances, the body becomes more flexible, the mood and the temper get better, people become happier, and sleep and appetite improve. Naturally, people are then less likely to be sick.
