Acupoints of the large intestine channel are mainly used for diseases of the head, face, five sense organs, and throat, as well as febrile diseases, other diseases and symptoms along the pathway of the channel, such as abdominal pain, abnormal bowel sound, constipation, diarrhea, dysentery, sore throat, toothache and epistaxis.
The functions of the large intestines (or Dà Cháng) in Chinese medicine are similar to those in modern medicine, including transmission and transformation of waste from the digestive process.
It is best to defecate regularly in the morning during the Mao period. For constipation or diarrhea, Hegu (LI 4) is recommended. As the yuan-source point of the large intestine channel, LI 4 is mostly used for five sensory disorders. Therefore, there is a saying in Chinese medicine that "LI 4 is considered first for various facial diseases".
Location: On the back of the hand, between the first and second metacarpal bones, in the middle of the second metacarpal bone on the radial side. A simple way to locate the point: Place the transverse crease of the interphalangeal joint of the thumb on the margin of the web between the thumb and the index finger on the opposite hand, so that they are in a parallel position; the tip of thumb is the point.
LI 4 can be used to scatter wind and release the exterior, unblock the channels and quicken the collaterals, and also to move qi to relieve pain. In addition to treating constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, dysentery and other gastrointestinal diseases, it can also be applied to the following diseases:
Facial, head and five sensory disorders such as headache, dizziness, facial paralysis with drooping of the mouth, mumps with facial swelling, lockjaw, gingival swelling and toothache, nasal congestion or runny nose, epistaxis, red eyes with swelling and pain, sore throat, deafness and tinnitus.
Limb and joint disorders such as hemiplegia, upper limb pain, spasm and paralysis.
Gynecological diseases such as prolonged labor, difficult delivery, amenorrhea and dysmenorrhea.
Other disorders such as absence of sweating, profuse sweating, depressive psychosis and mania, and infantile convulsion.
There are four common techniques for massaging LI 4: rubbing, kneading, one-finger pushing and direct pressing. Rubbing at LI 4 means to use the fingertip of the thumb to press the point with relatively deep pressure and knead the local skin. Kneading at LI 4 is to use the pad of the thumb to knead the local skin of the point gently. One-finger pushing at LI 4 is to place the fingertips of the thumb at the point and move it from side to side, with the movement being initiated from the wrist. Finger-pressing at LI 4 is to use the fingertips of the thumb to press the point. The thumb should not be bent.
It should be noted that LI 4 can induce labor, so pregnant women should use massage manipulations at this point with caution.
